Norwegian piano maestro Bugge Wesseltoft, pioneer of the electronic jazz movement and recently standing for celebrated intimate solopianoconcerts, teamed up with one of the worlds best and most looked after producer in the electronic music genre named Henrik Schwarz. They created a unique concert set exploring their ambient approach to jazz and the arts of electronic music. For both, Wesseltoft and Schwarz, this night opened up a new chapter of unique musical individualism inside an creative ensemble.

Even the two artists came to international fame for quite different skills, being an honoured jazzpianist and a highly demanded electronic producer, their foundations lay in the same musical background: the intense music of Miles Davis, Bill Evans and Sun Ra as also the productions of influencial house and techno pioneers Laurent Garnier, Francois Kervorkian or Moritz von Oswald from Basic Channel. These are the common basis of Schwarz and Wesseltofts tasteful approach to modality and energy, melodies and rhythms.

„I like the complexity in music“ Henrik Schwarz admits. „I like to cut already complex things into little pieces, mix them with other complex fragments and create something new out of them. If you manage to find the right balance between extremes you might be able to create something new and beautiful.“

Which is the perfect way to discribe the way they work together on stage: Wesseltofts harmonic chords are being send to his partners workstation. On the fly sampling and effectful looping leads to layers and complex textures filling up the room with simple beauty. The call and response feel of their improvised music and ambience soundscapes keeps the listeners tension all night long. video

1971, in Detroit, saxophonist Wendell Harrison and trombonist Phil Ranelin started a band, a recording company, and a magazine, and called them the Tribe. This legendary political, social, and aesthetic collective also included key members like trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, drummer Doug Hammond, Pianist Harold McKinney and other musicians.

Tribe like Sun Ra, Max Roach, Charles Mingus defined the very meaning of independent spirit and community in jazz. Few people in the Detroit area music scene have been untouched in some shape or form by the influence and impact of Tribe. The House, Techno and Hip Hop generation among them.

In spring 2007, internationally respected innovative producer Carl Craig re-assembled the remaining core living original members of the Tribe collective all still heavily active nationally and internationally and still very much in contact with.
In Craig’s newly refined Detroit Studio a brand new collective album started to take shape.

The record will feature classic Tribe material including a brand new arrangement of the Tribe classic “Vibes from The Tribe,” as well as new compositions written especially for the record. music | video
